About the Brother Juniper Collection at St. Bonaventure University:Brother Juniper is the creation of Fred McCarthy. He first saw the light of day in the summer of 1942 in the main reading room of Friedsam Memorial Library at St. Bonaventure. It was here that McCarthy was prompted to learn about the historical Brother Juniper and discovered how much his generic cartoon character resembled him. The Brother Juniper comic strip was first published in 1958 and ran until 1989. It eventually ran in over 100 papers in the United States, and overseas in Argentina, Australia, Brazil and Italy with over 15,000,000 potential readers. Brother Juniper was also collected in eight monographs. The collection includes 18 cu. ft. of material and 34 large panels. The majority of the collection includes small daily cartoon panels of Brother Juniper. The collection also includes background information, other comics, portraits of saints, religious artwork, and portraits of famous individuals. |
