    Fr. Theophilus was a native of Bohemia and was born July 24, 1829. He first worked for the Custody of the Immaculate Conception at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in New York City.  Ten years before Fr. Theophilus became president he taught Moral Theology and Sacred Scripture in the seminary. When elected president in 1881, Fr. Theophilus helped diffuse problems with the college gaining its permanent Board of Regents charter. In addition,  Fr Theophilus brought the first doctor to the campus and an extra medical fee of five dollars was added to the tuition.  In 1883, the College's first athletic club was chartered and was known as the Athletic Society, and in 1885 the Junior Athletic society was formed for the preparatory students.
