About the Douglas Edwards Archives
at St. Bonaventure University

Douglas Edwards (July 14, 1917 - Oct. 13, 1990)

Dan Rather has said that "Doug was the inventor of television news anchoring," and Edwards certainly was a pioneer in television news.  Though he never gave up radio broadcasting completely, even after taking over the television newscaster's position in 1946, his list of accomplishments in the early years of television is long.  It  includes the first television broadcasts of the national political conventions in 1948, and the first cross country television news broadcast in Sept. 1951.  His anchor position for the important evening news program at CBS ended with Walter Cronkite's assuming that role in 1962.  However, Edwards stayed to complete a 46 year career with CBS in radio and television.  He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2006.

Douglas Edward's association with St. Bonaventure University began in 1960 when he was keynote speaker for Press Day.  He served as a member of the Mark Hellinger Award Committee, assisting in finding candidates for the professional awards, and presented awards at the event.  He was awarded a honorary doctorate from the University in 1967 in recognition of his continuing achievements in the media and received the University's first Alumni Service Award in 1982.
